During “Pennyroyal Tea,” Kurt’s guitar began to cut out, and during the bridge in “Drain You” it went out completely, at which point Kurt tossed his guitar, gave a deep scream from frustration and finished singing the song without it.

“I know, let’s pretend this cat is Courtney Love”
- Krist to Kurt (1990)
Krist drove back to Seattle alone, sobbing. “Krist had a huge, huge amount of love for Kurt,” Shelli recalled. “We both did. He was family to us. I’d known him for almost half his life.” As a teenager, Shelli had slipped Kurt free Big Macs from behind the counter at the Aberdeen McDonald’s. For a couple of weeks back in 1989, Kurt, Tracy, Krist and Shelli had all shared the same double bed, sleeping in shifts. Kurt had once lived in a van behind their house, and Shelli would bring him blankets to make sure he didn’t freeze to death. Krist and Kurt had driven what seemed like a million miles together, and they had told each other things they had never told another soul. But that Tuesday night, Krist told Shelli he knew in his heart he would never see Kurt alive again, and he was right.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a song by Nirvana, it’s the opening track and lead single from the band’s second album, Nevermind (1991)
Cobain came up with the song’s title when his friend Kathleen Hanna spray painted “Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit” on his wall. (What Hanna actually meant was that Cobain smelled like the deodorant “Teen Spirit”, which his girlfriend Tobi Vail wore.)
“Smells Like Teen Spirit” was Nirvana’s first and biggest hit

Courtney Love told Dave Grohl she had a crush on Cobain, and later sent him this heart-shaped box with a letter and porcelain doll head inside of it.

-What do you do when you’re not playing music?
Well, I’m reading Perfume for the second time. It’s about a perfume apprentice in the 1700s. And I really like Camille Paglia a lot; it’s really entertaining, even though I don’t necessarily agree with what she says. I still paint once in a while-I painted the cover of Insecticide.
And I make dolls. I like the style of things from the 1700s and 1800s from Yugoslavia and that area. I copy them from doll-collector magazines. They’re clay. I bake them, and then I make them look really old and put old clothes on them. They look like I actually came across a real antique, because I don’t know where to find the dolls that are in those magazines. I could go to a doll-collectors show, but they’re so expensive. I don’t want to indulge in things like that-“Now that I’m a rock star, I buy antiques,” you know? [Laughs] Some of those things are, like, $50,000.

-Is there anything about Guns N’ Roses’ music you like?
I can’t think of a damn thing. I can’t even waste my time on that band, because they’re so obviously pathetic and untalented. I used to think that everything in the mainstrteam pop world was crap, but now that some underground bands have been signed with majors, I take Guns N’ Roses as more of an offense. I have to look into it more: They’re really talentless people, and they write crap music, and they’re the most popular rock band on the earth right now. I can’t believe it.
